BALTIMORE - Orioles third baseman Manny Machado began serving a five-game suspension Monday, nearly three weeks after Major League Baseball initially levied the sentence and five days after his appeal hearing. Machado was suspended and fined on June 10 for intentionally throwing his bat on the field during an at-bat in Baltimores game against Oakland on June 8. Machado immediately appealed the suspension, and spoke for about an hour Wednesday in an appeal hearing in Baltimore with MLB official Joe Garagiola Jr. The initial decision was upheld, meaning Machado will miss the Orioles four-game series against visiting Texas that began Monday, along with Friday nights game in Boston. "When we went in for an appeal I thought we had a good case, we had a great case," Machado said Monday afternoon. "We said what we had to say. It didnt come out how we wanted it to, but going into the appeal you know its going to be 50-50. Its something you cant control. I think we did the right thing, its a flip of the coin and we came up short. ... So now were just going to have to deal with the consequences." So will the Orioles, who will be forced to play with a 24-man roster. Chris Davis, who usually plays first base, was at third base on Monday night. "Thats the worst part about it. Were down a man," Machado said. "Obviously I dont want to put my team in that situation, especially five tough games." Machado tossed his bat in the direction of third base during a plate appearance in which Oakland reliever Fernando Abad threw successive high-and-tight pitches. After the bat went soaring, both benches emptied. Machado and Abad were ejected. Abad was fined but not suspended. "I didnt throw the bat at the pitcher. I didnt harm anybody. And Im going to get five games," Machado said. "I didnt charge the mound. I didnt get in a fight. ... This is an unfortunate event and Im going to have to deal with it." Orioles executive vice-president Dan Duquette said: "Obviously, we were disappointed. We were hoping the suspension would be reduced, and we thought there were good reasons it should have been reduced." In the opener of that series against the Athletics on June 6, Machado yelled in the face of Oaklands Josh Donaldson after the third baseman tagged him on the chest and caused him to lose his balance. Both benches emptied, but there were no ejections. "It sounded like they were giving him four games for the bat and they were also giving him an additional game for the Friday night," Duquette said. "I hadnt heard of a case where they went back and retroactively apply a suspension. ... The umpires didnt recommend any discipline; Manny stayed in the game. So that was kind of puzzling." Machado, 21, said he learned a lesson from the experience. "Dont do it again," he said. "You dont want to be in this situation. No one wants to be in it. Well just go from here and try to put this behind me and just go on playing baseball." Orioles manager Buck Showalter hoped the five-game sentence would be lowered after the appeal, but was ready to move on after the punishment remained in place. "It was surprising," Showalter said. "Were not going to dwell on it. We understand the rules and why things are in place for different reasons. There are repercussions for actions in baseball as there are in life in general. Hopefully, there will be some positive that comes out of it where Manny is concerned in the future and for all players, managers and coaches." Machado missed the first month of the 2014 season recovering from off-season knee surgery and got off to a slow start at the plate. Just before Mondays suspension, however, he had 10 hits over an eight-game span to raise his batting average 15 points to .239, and he also hit three home runs in his previous four starts. That made the timing of the suspension even tougher to take. "Definitely. It just (stinks)," he said. "I was starting to feel a little better at the plate and here they come with that bomb, five games. It was going to come. It was just about time to come. Unfortunately it came in the wrong spot, but hey, nothing you can do about it." When the game was on the line, he was happy with what he saw. Khris Middleton scored a career-high 29 points and Brandon Knight added 20 as the Bucks beat the Wizards 109-105 in overtime. Washington went 0 for 6 from the field in the extra period. "I thought they did a really good job, particularly defensively in overtime," Drew said. "I think they really locked in." John Henson had 19 points and 17 rebounds for the Bucks (4-15), who had lost 13 of their previous 14. "It was huge," Middleton said of the win. "Weve been struggling all season so far and just to gut out a win like this in overtime is good." John Wall scored 30 points and Trevor Ariza added 22 points and 12 rebounds for Washington. With the score tied at 102 heading to the extra period, Hensens jumper put the Bucks ahead in the opening minute and Ersan Ilyasova layup made it 106-102 with 3:12 to go. Ariza was fouled and made three free throws with 42.8 seconds left to pull the Wizards within one. Knight answered with a jumper with 21.1 seconds left and added a free throw 12 seconds later to seal the win and avenge Washingtons overtime win last week in Milwaukee. "I think weve given away a lot of wins," Knight said. "Weve gifted a lot of teams this year." Washington (9-10) had won two straight and missed chance to go over the .500 mark for the first time in four years "Somebody on this team has got to become the leader that doesnt allow these things to happen," Wizards coach Randy Wittman said. "I went into the locker room to talk to them before the game. It was carefree unlike the last two weeks. ... I told our guys when we walked out we could be in a little trouble tonight. Washington went 0 for 6 from the field in overtime. The Wizards, who trailed by 13 at halftime, rallied and led by five after Walls jumper with 43 seconds left in regulation. Middletons jumper cut the lead to three and, after a miss by Wall, Knights 3-pointer with 15.1 seconds left tied the score at 102. Washingtons Chris Singleton missed a corner three as regulation ended. "First half we played bad. Second half we had a chance to win it," Wall said. "The last 40 secondss we didnt execute.dddddddddddd. What were supposed to do to get stops. Washington lost Martel Webster to a sprained left ankle at the end of the first quarter and Nene (right knee tendinitis) in the third quarter. Washington chipped away at Milwaukees lead in the third quarter as Arizas 3 made pulled the Wizards to 78-74 heading to the fourth. The Wizards took an 85-84 lead on a driving dunk by Trevor Booker with 8:21 left and the teams traded the lead for the next several minutes. Drew called timeout during the first minute shortly after Washingtons Marcin Gortat was fouled going to the basket. "The first defensive play of the game we had a breakdown and that is just not acceptable and I felt it important to burn a timeout to let these guys know that were going to do it the right way," Drew said. "There cant be those type of breakdowns early in the game. It caught their attention." Washington forward Otto Porter Jr., the No. 3 overall pick in the June draft, made his NBA debut. Sidelined since September with a hip flexor, the former Georgetown star entered at the start the second quarter and played nearly 13 minutes, going 0 for 3 from the field with two rebounds. On the night the Wizards gained Porter, they played most of the game without Webster and the stretch run without Nene. As the first quarter ended, Webster missed a long 3. When he landed, he went to the floor. In obvious pain and holding his left ankle, he had to be assisted to the dressing room. The Wizards announced Webster had a sprained left ankle and he didnt return. The shot 14 for 21 in the first quarter and built a 42-33 lead early in the second. Washington closed to 42-40 on a jumper by Nene, but the Bucks went on a 15-1 run, capped by Nate Wolters baseline drive late in the quarter, and led 56-43 at halftime. "We came out and played like its a pickup game in the first half," Wittman said. "Thats where we lost the game." Middleton had 20 of his points on 7-for-11 shooting in the first half.
