Middleweight titleholder Billy Joe Saunders defense against Artur Akavov has been postponed for one week, promoter Frank Warren announced Wednesday.Englands Saunders and Akavov, of Russia, were scheduled to headline Warrens card on Saturday at Motorpoint Arena in Cardiff, Wales. However, according to Warren, Akavovs medical paperwork was in Russian, resulting in a delay in getting it translated and forcing the fight to be postponed until Dec. 3.Now the fight will headline Warrens already scheduled card at the Paisley Lagoon Centre in Paisley, Scotland, where up-and-coming junior welterweight Jack Catterall (16-0, 9 KOs) and former bantamweight world titleholder Paul Butler (22-1, 12 KOs) will also be in action. Its extremely frustrating for all parties and especially Billy, who has been itching to get back into the ring following a frustrating 2016, Warren said in a statement. The medicals were sent late and mostly in Russian and once translated it then became apparent they were not complete.Ultimately, it would be too late to find a suitable replacement so postponing it was our only option. I feel for Billy Joe as he was ready to make the first defense of his world title and for all of the fans who wanted to watch him.Alex Vaysfeld, who is part of Akavovs team, added, This is no more than a translation problem and will be easily rectified upon Akavovs arrival in the U.K. and Im glad Frank was able to postpone for just a week.Saunders, 27, has not fought since winning a 160-pound world title last Dec. 19 by majority decision against Irelands Andy Lee. Saunders has either pulled out of fights or had them canceled or postponed multiple times since.I was ready to put on a big performance and defend my title in style in Cardiff but unfortunately this latest issue was totally out of our control, Saunders said in the statement. The fight is still on -- thats the main thing -- and Ill be fully prepared to defend my title in Scotland next week before moving on to a blockbuster fight in 2017.Saunders (23-0, 12 KOs) and Akavov (16-1, 7 KOs) were supposed to fight Oct. 22 the Motorpoint Arena, but the fight was postponed until Saturday because Saunders suffered a training injury. Before that the fight was scheduled for Oct. 29 at Manchester Arena in Manchester, England, on the undercard of the heavyweight championship rematch between Tyson Fury and Wladimir Klitschko. However, when Fury-Klitschko II was canceled, Warren shifted Saunders-Akavov to the Oct. 22 card. After he won the title, Saunders repeatedly called out unified world titleholder Gennady Golovkin and then turned down a career-high, seven-figure payday to face him when offered the fight. Saunders instead signed to defend against Ukraines Max Bursak on April 30 in London, but pulled out, citing a left hand injury, and the fight was not rescheduled. Then Saunders was offered a guaranteed fight with superstar Canelo Alvarez if he would first defeat Gabriel Rosado, Willie Monroe Jr. or Curtis Stevens -- his camps choice -- in the co-feature of Alvarezs knockout victory against Liam Smith to win a junior middleweight world title on Sept. 17. Saunders rejected all of those second-tier opponents because the only opponent he wanted to face was the unknown Akavov, 30, but Golden Boy Promotions did not want him as the opponent on the card.Saturdays card will be headlined by the original co-feature of lightweight titleholder Terry Flanagan (31-0, 12 KOs) of England against Puerto Ricos Orlando Cruz (25-4-1, 13 KOs), boxings first openly gay fighter. RIO DE JANEIRO -- Japan swept the judo gold medals at the Rio de Janeiro Olympics on Wednesday, taking the top spot in both mens and womens middleweight divisions.Haruka Tachimoto struck gold first by defeating triple world champion Yuri Alvear in the womens 70-kilogram division.Despite being penalized for passivity in the first minutes of the final -- and a partisan crowd cheering against her -- Tachimoto managed to pin Alvear to the ground for 20 seconds, scoring an ippon victory that automatically ends the bout.Alvear, 30, won a bronze at the London Olympics. She was Colombias flag bearer at the opening ceremony. After a disappointing seventh-place finish at the London Games, Tachimoto said she refocused her style, training in Mongolia and England, and honing a more defensive, counterattacking style that she used to defeat Alvear. The womens bronze medals were won by Britains Sally Conway and Germanys Laura Vargas Koch.A short time after the womens medal competition ended, Japans Mashu Baker took the judo gold in the mens 90-kilogram division. The second-seeded Baker, 21, defeated Georgias Varlam Liparteliani in a cagey final in which Baker managed to score only once. Like Tachimoto, he too was booed by the crowd, which expressed disapproval that Baker appeared to be withdrawing from the fight in its final minutes. But with Liparteliani failing to score, Bakers one throw was enough to win.Baker, whose father is American, trained at the Kodokan, the spiritual home of the JJapanese martial art and its most famed dojo after starting judo at age 6.dddddddddddd Baker has won four judo Grand Slam titles and took a bronze at last years world championships. He was raised by his mother in Japan and said he was dedicating his gold medal to her. She traveled with him to Rio.To be an Olympic champion was my dream when I was young, so Im very happy now, he said. Baker acknowledged that he fought defensively in the latter part of the fight, seeking to protect his slight lead by not risking being attacked by Liparteliani.Liparteliani was seeded fifth and fought at the London Olympics but got knocked out in the second round. The loss left him in tears and he struggled to maintain his composure through the medals ceremony. The mens bronze medals were won by South Koreas Donghan Gwak and Chinas Xunzhao Cheng.Japans two golds Wednesday put the country atop the judo medal table, adding to the gold already won by Shohei Ono in the mens 73-kilogram division Monday. Although Japan dominated for years at the Olympics in the martial art it developed, the country had its worst performance at the London Games, where it won only one gold.We have to perform graciously and courageously because Japan is the home of judo, Tachimoto said after her win. Judo is one of the most important sports to the Japanese people, and they expect gold medals. ' ' '
